As a South African I must endorse your comments on downtown Johannesburg – stay away if you can!!!! Once you’ve arrived at the airport, get the next flight out to Cape Town or Durban and start to ENJOY your holiday in our beautiful country. From London to Johannesburg, I was flying SAA. Airfare is little bit more than $1300 in low season, but they get special offers regularly. This a good airline, though service is little bit strict like in a flying barrack. This is better in Gold and Blue Diamond class, though of course much more expensive. In Jo’burg, the Sun Towers is the best hotel in downtown, though I rather advise visitors -and mostly tourists- to rather avoid this very dangerous part of the city; staying somewhere in Sandton, the posh area of J0′burg, is highly advisable. This is secure and clean, with green gardens and public parks. Sorry to say so, but blacks are very aggressive in Jo’burg: even between themselves. There is a lot of riots opposing Zulus and Xhosas. This is not actually a friendly city. White also are unfriendly, there. Pretoria looks safer, but this is a modern administrative city without attraction for tourists. People are more friendly there, should they be black or white. The top of the top remains Stellenbush (wine cellars), Capetown (great city) and Durban (a lot of Indians, and a very Victorian downtown. Nice beaches also).
