Question:
Hi I live in South Africa where catfish are abundant and rather large to say the least. When I served on the border, fishing in the Orange river between South Africa and Namibia was the only recreation we had. I have often seen 6 to 7 feet catfish come out of this river which are sold by the locals. I grabbed a local fishing magazine and scanned a pic of a guy with three large cats, one he claimed to weigh in at 80 pounds. Enjoy. Terry

Back in the mid-60’s, I was on the Lake Murray dam looking into crystal clear water and wondering what those monsters were that I saw swimming lazily by. Could have been catfishes, but then again it might have be a couple of pickup trucks, the Dixie version of a submarine! — Go fishing. And may your fish be as big as your tales! I grew up near Clark’s Hill in the 1950’s and I was told the cats that ran the divers off were as big as a 57 Chevy. While in the Univ. of GA near lake Hartwell in the late 1960’s, I heard the cats there that ran the divers off were big as a VW bug I moved to Griffin, near Jackson Lake in the 1970’s and was told the cats that ran the divers off there were as big as a ford truck. I have heard the same story at Eufaula, Lanier and lately, West Point. I wonder why nobody catches those car sized cats? Think it was the same divers on all those lakes? Last weekend on the James River near Richmond, Va someone caught a new state record catfish at 71 lbs, 14 oz…so 80 lbs would not be that far off,,,anythings possible. Years ago, some navy divers were doing repair work at the base of the Occoquan dam near Woodbridge, Va and they had to give up on the repair because of the man sized catfish pushing them out of thier way.
